چکیده

This study examines the motion patterns of the midsagittal section of the tongue during elevation of the tongue body. The motion from /u/ to /k/ is a very small one. Therefore, glossectomy patients who can make a /u/ should be able to make a /k/. However, because of the altered anatomy it appears that their execution of this gesture differs from the normal speaker due to scar accommodation and motion of the flap. The word "a souk" or “disouk” was spoken by six normal speakers, and five postglossectomy patients with T1 or T2 tumors, N0M0; four with primary closure and one with radial forearm free flap. All patients produced a normal sounding /k/. The goal of this work was to quantitatively characterize any motion differences between the normal and patient speakers.

Assessing the suitability of medial sural artery perforator flaps in tongue reconstruction – An outcome study

INTRODUCTION Oncological resection of the tongue can be reconstructed using a multitude of free flaps. The medial sural artery perforator (MSAP) flap has been well described in the literature in terms of its anatomy and harvest. However, functional outcome studies of post-reconstruction tongue defects using the MSAP flap have not been reported. This study represents the largest outcome study of...

Quality of life in patients after resection of pT3 lateral tongue carcinoma: Microvascular reconstruction versus primary closure.

BACKGROUND Controversy exists regarding the functional advantages of free flap reconstruction after partial glossectomy as compared to primary closure. METHODS Forty patients were included in this retrospective analysis after resection of pT3 lateral tongue carcinomas. Twenty patients received a free forearm flap and 20 patients had a primary closure. All patients had adjuvant chemoradiation,...

A preliminary application of principal components and cluster analysis to internal tongue deformation patterns.

Complex patterns of muscle contractions create gross tongue motion during speech. It is of scientific and medical importance to better understand speech motor strategies and variations due to language or disorders. Dense patterns of tongue motion can be imaged using tagged magnetic resonance imaging, but characterisation of motion strategies is difficult using visualisation alone. This paper ex...

Obstructive sleep apnea after radial forearm free flap reconstruction of the oral tongue.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS To determine whether radial forearm free flap reconstruction of the tongue after partial glossectomy is associated with obstructive sleep apnea. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective case series. METHODS Fifteen patients (5 men, 10 women) treated for tongue cancer in 2006-2010 by partial glossectomy and immediate radial forearm free flap reconstruction completed the Epworth Sleep...

Improving the Swallowing in Total Glossectomy With Laryngeal Preservation

Introduction: This study aims to evaluate the parameters that might have an impact on swallowing performance after a total glossectomy with laryngeal preservation (TGLP). Methods: Among 39 patients who underwent surgery with curative intent for squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue, our retrospective analysis focused on 18 patients treated by TGLP and flap reconstruction. The flap was position...
